Each of the following states have a recycling fee depending the product purchased on a per unit basis.

California

On Jan 1, 2025 CalRecycle approved the $16 recycling fee and MRC’s budget. Plan approval followed on Jan. 29, 2016. Starting Apr. 1, 2026, the recycling fee will increase from $16 to $18 per unit.

Connecticut

Connecticut’s mattress recycling law requires mattress producers to establish and join a nonprofit organization charged with creating a mattress stewardship (recycling) program to manage unwanted mattresses and box springs in the state (CGS § 22a-905 et seq.). The mattress industry created the Mattress Recycling Council (MRC) to fulfill this requirement. The state neither administers the program, nor collects its fees. MRC branded the program as “Bye Bye Mattress.” As required by law, a fee is charged at the point of sale, which the retailer transmits to MRC. The fee is currently set at $16 per unit (mattress or box spring) and pays for such things as collecting, transporting, and processing discarded mattresses; audits; public education materials; and maintaining a financial reserve. Although MRC is principally responsible for the program, the state’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) is, however, tasked with enforcing the law’s requirements.

Rhode Island

In July 2013, Rhode Island enacted General Law 23-90, which requires mattress manufacturers to create a statewide recycling program for discarded mattresses. The program began May 1, 2016, and is funded through a $22.50 visible recycling fee collected at retail from customers on each mattress and foundation sold in the state. These fees fund the collection and recycling of mattresses and foundations used and discarded in Rhode Island.

Colorado

Effective July 1, 2022, in an effort to address sustainability of the transportation system in the state, Colorado imposes a $0.29 retail delivery fee on all deliveries by motor vehicle to a location in Colorado with at least one item of tangible personal property subject to state sales tax. This retail delivery fee is included when any Purple product is mailed, shipped, or otherwise delivered by motor vehicle to a purchaser in Colorado. As a fee collected and remitted to the Colorado Department of Revenue, this fee is not refundable on product returns.

Oregon

In January 2025, Oregon’s Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) authorized the Mattress Recycling Council (MRC) to create a statewide mattress recycling program. The program will be funded by a $22.50 per unit DEQ-approved stewardship assessment collected on the sale of each mattress and foundation sold for use in Oregon.

The plan covers accidental household damage including stains, rips, cuts, punctures, and burns. These incidents must be caused by an accident or sudden event.

The Guardsman Protection Plan is an optional extended protection plan that provides additional coverage for accidental damage and certain structural failures beyond the manufacturer’s warranty. Coverage varies depending on the product type (mattresses, adjustable bases, or bed frames).

The manufacturer’s warranty applies first. If the manufacturer’s warranty coverage expires or doesn't apply to your issue, the Guardsman Protection Plan will begin covering eligible issues.

Yes. You will receive a hard copy of your protection plan within 21 days after purchase, customized with your name and plan barcode. This document should be kept for reference when filing a claim.

No. Coverage ends when an item or part is replaced under the protection plan. If a full item is replaced, the manufacturer warranty will not apply and a new protection plan would need to be purchased to continue coverage Individual component parts are not eligible for a new plan.

Normal wear and tear is not covered under the protection plan. Examples include pilling, pulls, snags, fraying fabric, and light surface scratches on wood. These are considered ordinary use rather than accidental damage.

Claims are filed directly with Guardsman. You can submit a claim online here or by phone: 800-253-3957. Please refer to Section 2: “How to File a Claim” in your protection plan document for detailed instructions.

Photos are not required, but they are strongly recommended. Including photos can help Guardsman review and process the claim more quickly.

Claim status can be checked at Guardsman.com. First, click “Submit a Claim” at the top of the page. Second, scroll down and select the Claim Status icon. Lastly, enter the claim number and the your zip code.

If a technician services a stain and the stain reappears, you must contact Guardsman within 30 days of the technician’s visit.

No. The technician is responsible only for the affected area reported in the claim. Cleaning is performed only on the stained area or section rather than the entire piece.
